Dear Luisma,

It seems as though our ancestors here in Britain might have used the same word for "temple" or "holy place" as yours.

The Basque word leku "place" probably originally referred to a sacred site or place of worship.

Hence place-names like Lakune, Lakine, Lakinimurga, Lekunberri, Lacobriga, etc.

I can only find one ancient place-name in Britain which incorporates this element. And that is Lagentium, which today is Castleford, West Yorkshire.

No-one has come up with an alternative explanation, as far as I know.

Yours sincerely,
